*Will we swoon over the Zune? The Zune has launched, all under the umbrella of Microsoft! Amongst its interesting capabilities is its ability to beam songs to a fellow Zune-ster, thanks to its wireless capabilities. Now joining the Zune 30 is the sleeker Zune 80 (no, the Zune 30 accessories will not fit the Zune 80). Also, the tiny Zune 4/8 for those looking for a Zune "lite" is also available.

Mainstay Computing

Here are the 2 major factors to consider if you are in the market for a new computer:
 1. Are you looking for a desktop or a laptop? The answer to this lies in your lifestyle, sometimes even your eyesight! Many now choose to have an excellent desktop computer for home, and a laptop with most of the frills for travel. Others settle for an all-purpose laptop that can be used both at home and away.

If you are in the market for a desktop, be sure to look at the following:

If, however, you might be looking to purchase a laptop, check out the following:

 2. The other raging debate is whether you should get a Mac (sold by Apple) or a PC (including but not exclusive to major companies like Dell). Macs are often used for educational institutions, but are used by only 5% of the computer-using population. PC's are used by the rest, and are favored by web developers and programmers. However, many recording engineers favor the Apple line of products for the sophistication in sound editing.

To be perfectly fair, judge for yourself, and explore the different types of products offered, according to price range,  your personal requirements for the computer (basic, complex, growing?):

The UMPC

The launching of the newest line, the UMPC, a tiny all-in-one computer that packs a lot into its sleek and diminutive shell is a breakthrough in all-in-one, less-is-more technology. UMPC stands for "Ultra Mobile Personal Computer" and combines the following functions:

  • internet surfing for information
  • GPS for the car or for walking
  • movie downloads and watching
  • music downloads and storage
  • TV shows
  • communications including email, instant messaging and text messages

The UMPC comes with a little keyboard that makes typing possible, but it is not meant for the composing of major documents, but rather as a companion for your home computer. The device is great for travel, commuting and as a convenient tool for the home which someone can access while the desk computer is in use or in another part of the house.

The Nintendo Wii Wait is Nearly Over!

The Nintendo Wii is now set to ship shortly. Its former code name is the "Nintendo Revolution" and its predecessor the Nintendo GameCube. This "Wii the People" multi-media console will be capable of wi-fi, games and most importantly, will be priced lower than its existing counterparts (e.g. the XBox360), with an anticipated price of no more than $299! Games for the Wii will be downloadable for something between US$4-8.

With the Wii launching will be synchronization of functions with the DS (or Dual Screen handheld console), which will act as a touch screen and enable download demos from the Wii. AND, a new game called the Pokemon Revolution is set to release this fall, as well as the Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl for the DS! These latter 2 games will use the DS voice chat capabilities.

iPod, Meizu Miniplayer and more

One of the "gadgets" that catapulted Apple's profit base was the iPod. These provide magnificent storage, and can be synchronized with different programs on your computer quite easily. They come with different storage capabilities and have basically rendered the formerly popular portable CD player obsolete. They also have different calendar and to-do functions. Then along came video capabilities.

"Step Aside iPod?" One gizmo to hit the market was the Meizu Miniplayer! Meizu's M6 Miniplayer has just positioned itself as the style & performance leader in the portable music player category. Smaller in size than a credit card these incredible players are packed with features. Supports MP3, MP2, WMA, OGG audio files, voice recording, FM radio broadcast with adjustable bass and treble, FM radio recording, mobile disk, synchronized song lyrics showing, text view, photos browsing and games. Check the Mini Player sites for updates to the M6 model.

Remember that with either the UMPC or the iPod (or any other device that has sound), the sound does depend on the sorts of speakers or headphones that you use. With speakers, one generally gets what one pays for. For headphones, it depends greatly on your tolerance for the comfort level, or the level of portability. The Bose noise cancellation headphones are really second to none -- comfortable, superb sound, and cancelling out a certain level of frequency of noise (particularly on airplanes) that make for a more cocooned listening experience. (However, they do NOT cancel out all noise. You should not expect that all noise would be cut out if you are standing next to a construction site!)
